What is a Macchiato ?
Macchiato is an espresso-based milky beverage. Less milk is used compared to other coffees prepared with milk. This preserves the flavor and aroma of the espresso. However, when you order macchiato in different coffee shops, you can drink different coffees. The reason for this is that the amounts of milk, foam and added substances used are different. There are basically 2 different types of macchiato: espresso macchiato and latte macchiato. Espresso macchiato is a regular Italian macchiato prepared with traditional methods and has a globally accepted recipe. The traditional Italian macchiato contains only espresso and milk foam. (without sweetener or syrup) It is also called espresso macchiato for this reason. Those who describe espresso as strong coffee will probably not like this coffee either. For this reason, those who like sweet and sugary drinks may feel the need to add sugar. Another factor affecting the strength of this drink is the amount of espresso used. A traditional macchiato uses 1 shot (30 ml) of espresso. As you can imagine, the higher the amount of espresso used, the stronger the coffee will be.
So where does this drink get its name ? Macchiato means "spotted" or "stained" in Italian. It was given this name because the image created by the milk foam added to the espresso evokes the spots. Regular Italian macchiato (espresso macchiato), prepared with traditional methods, is also ordered as caffe macchiato. Latte macchiato, which is consumed frequently today, is prepared differently and there are differences between this drink and regular macchiato.
Latte, macchiato, latte machiato, espresso machiato… Yes, we are aware, there has been a bit of confusion in terms. So what are the differences between all these words?
What is the Difference Between Latte and Macchiato ?
Latte means "milk" in Italian. Caffe latte, as the name suggests, is a milk-based drink. It is usually prepared by adding a large amount of milk to a double espresso. In the traditional macchiato, there is milk foam over 1 shot of espresso. Although the ingredients of these two drinks are similar, their amounts and flavors are different.
What is the Difference Between Latte Macchiato and Espresso Macchiato ?
You have to be careful when ordering macchiato. Unless you say so, the barista would not know if you want an espresso macchiato or a latte macchiato.
We said that the regular macchiato is made by adding only milk foam on to the espresso and it is also called espresso macchiato. So what are the differences with the latte macchiato?
• Espresso is added last to the hot milk while making latte macchiato. As a result, a 3-layer structure is formed. If you are using a glass cup, you can easily see the 3 layers formed. (Milk foam at the top, espresso below, and milk at the bottom)
• In latte macchiato, 1-2 shots of espresso and about 10 times that of milk are used. Since the drink contains a large amount of milk, it is a smooth drink and is served in tall & large glasses. (236 - 470 ml)
• Espresso macchiato consists of only 1 shot of espresso and milk foam. Therefore, it is a strong aromatic coffee and is served in small mugs.
